This setting really explains the dry and humid weather around California. Some places that are significant to this book are the top of the roof that Astrid and Ingrid live on. This is a place where the two of them are constanly going and talking. Astrid's first foster home really sets the pathway for the rest of the novel. This is the place where Astrid falls in love with Ray. Throughout the rest of the book, she compares any man she comes across with to Ray. The second place that is significant is Astrid's neighbors house, this is a place where she always goes to get out her feelings and to just have fun.

White Oleander day 3

#4
Ingrid, Astrid's mom can be considered a flat character. Ingrid is an idependent, poetic, strong hearted women. She has taught Astrid to only and always think of herself before others. She always refers to them as The Vikings. There is a scene in the book where Astrid visits her mom in jail, she hasn't seen her in months so she is very sad, happy, and excited so Astrid starts to cry when her mom doesnt let her, she thinks it shows weakness and that they are The Vikings and The Vikings never cry or show emotion. Toward the begining of the book when Barry, Ingrids boyfriend at the time is going to spend the night, the next morning Ingrid tells Astrid to never let a man spend the night, Astrid refers to her moms beauty as the edge of a very sharp knife. In the begining of the book there is a part where the two girls are sitting together and Ingrid is reading Astrid a poem, she stops reading and says to Astrid "Always learn poems by heart, they have to become the marrow in your bones. Like flouride in the water, they'll make your sul impervious to the world's soft decay." Ingrid is always saying things that make Astrid think hard about life. Throughout the book Ingrid's personality never changes she is always deep, sad, and dark with her character.

White Oleander day 2

#9
Astrid is a teenager when her mom Ingrid is arrested and sent to a state prison for murdering her boyfriend. When Astrid is sent off to foster care she shows character vs character while she is as 2 of the foster places. In the 1st foster place she stays at, is a huge group of girls in one big building, Astrid picks a fight with one of the girls there. While at her second house she lives with a lady named Starr and her 2 children and 2 other foster children. Starr and Astrid get into numerous arguments over "uncle Ray" who is Starr's boyfriend, Astrid is young and pretty and Starr feels threatened by her. The second form is character vs. self, Astrid is overwhlemed by being put into foster, she keeps telling herself her mom will get out soon and come back for her, while at Starrs house Astrid notices that she is 13 not 12, she says she didn't know she grew one year older, it's almost like it happened over night. She is getting all these emotions and feels like she is hassle haveing to be thrown into different houses every few months, Astrid can't believe she has to grow up without a mom while she is a teenager.

White Oleander day 1

Title - White Oleander
Author - Janet Fitch
Number of pages-469
Publisher and copyright- 1999, little brown and company
why did you select this - i love the movie
what clues did you get from the cover - that it is a very serious and dark book the book has a lot of character to it.

day 9

the main character of the novel is Leo and mainly stargirl, in the beginging stargirl really keeps to herself and doesnt open up until the end of the book she becomes very popular. Stargirl is really open and energized.
this novel is about an ordinary girl that is just trying to be open and nice to everyone, all she wants to do is see people laugh. she doesnt turn down anyone and on there birthdays she always sings to them at their lunch table. stargirl is hilarious especially during hotseat.
this story takes place at Mica high school. The setting is present time, the location relates to peoples styles and cliques at school. You can tell its present day by slang terms and the groups there are.
the climax of the novel is when stargirl is at her first cheerleading game. she jumps all around and really comes out, people are in aw as they watch her she had so much school spirt. People loved her and always laughed at her when she jumped on the touch down poles. she became popular right after that moment.
the author i feel wrote this story to really show what high school is like, the author showed that all you have to do is get to know a person not just judge them by how they dress or how they may act. when people really got to know stargirl they fell in love with her.
Stargirl3

An interesting character i have met throughout this book has to be Stargirl, Stargirl is a carefree person, she can care less what anyone thinks about her and shes always trying to get attention somehow or always trying to make everyone laugh and have a good time. During pages 31-60 Stargirl is put on Hot Seat and well she milks the show for all its worth. During some of the questioning stargirl's eye widen alot and she jumps off the seat waving behinde her butt like its on fire like her seat was hot.
